At 20 percent of the U.S. population, people with disabilities comprise one of the nation’s largest market segments. Persons with disabilities have a combined income of nearly $700,000,000,000, of which $175,000,000,000 is discretionary. Just to give you an idea as to how much a trillion is, if a baseball stadium was a goldfish bowl, we could fit a billion goldfish in it. The United States has not been around a trillion seconds. Yet, with all this buying power, according to research in the American Academy of Advertising, “The majority of mobility-disabled consumers find getting out to be difficult.”
Solution: Architects, CEO’s, store managers and the like should sit in a vehicle in the parking lot outside of their buildings with their ankles duct taped together and drink plenty of coffee. When and only when they need to use the restroom they should try to get out of their vehicle, into an extra large wheel chair (the U.S. population is also getting larger). See how long it takes them to get from the vehicle into their buildings then to the restroom. Then try this again without a wheel chair; this time with an assistant. How long does it take to locate a wheelchair? Is there a wheelchair available? Remember, the assistant cannot leave the car until the person they are assisting has consumed at least a pint or more of coffee. Now wait for your assistant….

This is a great idea! I might try it with some of my store managers. Thanks. Great blog. Jim
